Agriculture

The Province of Azilal benefits from a diverse agricultural landscape. Its mountainous terrain and microclimates create ideal conditions for high-value, niche production chains that are increasingly sought-after in national and international markets.

Saffron

Azilal's high-altitude valleys offer perfect conditions for saffron cultivation. Known as 'red gold,' Moroccan saffron is among the world's finest, with growing demand in gastronomy, cosmetics, and natural medicine.

Almonds

Almond orchards thrive in the province's semi-arid foothills. The Béni Mellal-Khénifra region is one of Morocco's leading almond producers, with the Green Morocco Plan supporting modernization and cooperative organization.

Walnuts

Traditional walnut groves dot the valleys of the High Atlas. Azilal walnuts are prized for their quality and the province is investing in improved varieties and processing infrastructure to capture more value locally.

Olives

Olive cultivation is deeply rooted in the region's agricultural heritage. Cooperatives benefit from support to produce high-quality extra virgin olive oil, with growing access to certification and export channels.

Carob

Carob trees flourish in the province's dry areas. Carob derivatives are used in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics — an emerging value chain with strong potential for cooperative-based entrepreneurship.

Apples

Apple orchards benefit from the province's altitude and water resources. The region is expanding cold storage and processing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access.

Honey

Beekeeping is a vital livelihood in rural Azilal. The province's biodiversity produces distinctive honeys from thyme, euphorbia, and wildflowers. Cooperatives are gaining access to quality labels and wider distribution.

Handicrafts

Azilal is renowned for its authentic Amazigh craftsmanship passed down through generations. The province's artisans produce distinctive handmade goods that carry deep cultural significance and are gaining recognition in international design markets.

Weaving

Azilal rugs and textiles are world-famous for their bold geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Woven by Amazigh women in the High Atlas, each piece tells a story through its motifs — attracting collectors and interior designers globally.

Sculpture on Wood

Woodcarving is a cherished tradition in the province, producing intricately decorated furniture, doors, and decorative items from local cedar and walnut wood. Artisans combine ancestral techniques with contemporary design.

Grain Derivatives

Traditional grain processing produces couscous, barley flour, and other specialty products. Women's cooperatives are modernizing production while preserving artisanal quality, opening access to organic and gourmet markets.

Tourism

Azilal province is home to some of Morocco's most spectacular natural landscapes, including the Ouzoud Waterfalls, the Aït Bouguemez Valley ('Happy Valley'), and the High Atlas mountains. The region is positioning itself as a premier destination for sustainable and experiential tourism.

Mountain Tourism

Trekking, hiking, and mountaineering in the High Atlas attract adventurers year-round. The M'Goun massif (4,068m) and surrounding valleys offer world-class trails with stunning geological formations, gorges, and traditional Amazigh villages.

Rural Tourism

Guesthouses (gîtes) and community-based lodges allow visitors to experience authentic Amazigh hospitality, traditional cuisine, and daily rural life. This sector creates direct income for remote communities while preserving cultural heritage.

Solidarity Tourism

Projects connecting visitors with local cooperatives, schools, and community development initiatives. Solidarity tourism generates sustainable revenue while fostering cultural exchange and supporting social impact.

Services

Value-added services around local product marketing form a critical link between Azilal's producers and national and international markets. The province supports entrepreneurs developing innovative distribution and branding solutions.

Marketing of Local Products

Packaging, branding, e-commerce platforms, and collective marketing initiatives help Azilal cooperatives reach wider audiences. Entrepreneurs are building bridges between rural producers and urban/export markets through digital tools, quality certification, and modern logistics.
